With New Years Eve less than a few days away I’d like to take some time and talk about some of the more common makeup mistakes women make for a special occasion. When a special occasion comes around, the need to feel “put together” is greater than anyone will ever know. Because of this, a woman can feel like she needs to “pull out all of the stops” when getting ready for the special event. This can and usually does lead to some increased level of anxiety in making sure she will look her very best for this special affair. Now is not the time to try a new hairstyle or color. That alone is enough to send a woman into crisis mode if it doesn’t work out the way she had planned. The best thing to do is to style your hair in a way the flatters your features best. Then think of adding a jeweled barrette or an actual piece of jewelry to your hair for a touch of sparkle.

Now is also not the time to go overboard with your makeup as well. The most common mistake most women make is doing a lot of shimmer on their eyes, sparkles on their cheeks and a full glossy look on their lips. The problem is that you and your features get lost when there is that much shimmer and sparkle. The first thing people see is a face full of shimmer, and then they see you. You should be the first thing that people see when they look at you, not your makeup.

The best way to play up your look is to choose a facial features and highlight it with makeup. When you create your look to bring out only one feature, you will want to play down the rest of your face. This means that you will want to make the other features appear as natural as possible.

If you were blessed with beautiful eyes then by all means play them up like there is no tomorrow. Go for a smoldering, romantic smokey eye look. A smokey eye look does not mean a bunch of black and gray eye shadows. It’s an application technique, not a color combination. Choose colors for your eyeliner, eye colors, and mascara that are going to compliment your eye color. For example if you have blue eyes then using taupe and various shades of brown will help make your blue eyes pop.

You will also want to give your eyebrows some special attention as well. Your eyebrows are what help to frame your face. You do not have to go all out, but you should groom them. This will help expose any stray hairs that can easily be removed at that time.

Once you have your eyes done then move onto your cheeks. Make sure you use a cheek color that is in a soft shade that is very close to the color your cheeks turn when you naturally blush. You will also want to play down your lips as well. All of the emphasis should be focused on your eyes. One word of caution, do not make you lips look to natural. If you do the rest of your face will disappear. You will want to do a natural look, but make sure that there is a hint of color. This will help to frame the bottom of your face.

If you were blessed with high cheek bones, then that is the best feature to highlight. Instead of doing a heavy, smokey eye look; opt for a more soft and natural look for your eyes. You can carry off a brighter cheek color by adding a highlight color on the top of the cheek color and a contour color underneath the cheek color. Make sure that all three colors are completely blended together so it looks like they fade one into the next. Again, like before with the smokey eye look, you will want to play down your lips with a more neutral look. All of the emphasis is on your amazing cheekbones with this look.

Now if you are one of those women who were born with a perfect pout then you want to focus all of the attention on those very kissable lips. The first thing you will want to do is line the lips with a lip pencil that is close to your natural lip color. After you line the lips, you will want to also fill in the lips w. the same lip liner. This will help the color last longer. It will also help to keep you from looking like there is a ring around your lips if the lip color does wear off.

The next step is to apply the lip color. You will get a better application if you use a lip brush instead of applying the lip color directly from the tube. This will also help your lip color to last longer if you use a brush as well. When applying the lip color you want to start at one corner and with a sweeping motion move the color across your lips to the other corner.

The last step is to apply a lip gloss. This will help to extend the wear of your lip color, and help to protect it at the same time. You can choose a gloss that is in the same color family to help add more depth, or you can choose to use a clear gloss just to add extra shine. After you apply the gloss do not rub your lips together to blend the colors. This will actually destroy the look you are trying to create. Instead you will want to “kiss” the air, and then blot with a tissue. This way you will not ruin all of the work you just did.
